If i take my cpu heatsink out for cleaning to i have to reapply the thermal paste or is it safe to just put the heatsink back after cleaning without the paste.

Best to clean the cpu surface and the heatsink surface and then apply the paste. From what I understand the paste fills any small/micro voids or gaps that may occur between the cpu surface and heatsink surface. The paste is a thermal conductor.

You should first carefully clean the joining surfaces. Gently rub off what you can, then clean with a paper towel very slightly moistened with 91% rubbing alchohol. Dry, reapply thermal paste, and reinstall.

That's the risk-free plan. You can run without paste, or with unevenly distributed / contaminated old paste and take your chances... I'd like to see the temps on some of these "no paste" systems during gaming or video conversion... Even stock heatsinks always come with a pad or paste.

Why bother cleaning the heatsink to maximize performance and then reduce performance in the conduction of heat between the CPU and heatsink?
