Why don't you ask your doctor? He/she can tell you exactly what's happening. Sounds like a lot of osteo-arthritis, to me.

First of all you don't need spinal surgery. M73 is correct, you have a osteoarthritis of the spine and it will continue to progress. Unless some of the disc is in the spinal canal, surgery will not help. The MRI report should say if the disc is herniating out. Disc space narrowing/collapse is a component of arthritis. Your lower spine curves to the right and the spurs are from the arthritis. Right now you can treat the pain with meds and try physical therapy to help with the pain.

With out the benefit of knowing your age, height and weight the most I can tell you with any degree of confidence is that depending on your level of pain you will probaly need spine surgery at some point. You would benefit from consulting with a orthopod and or neurosurgeon that specializes in Complex Spine surgery!!!

if your like me, a very untreatable problem that spreads over time. Try to keep good posture. Celebrex is good for some relief.
