Every time someone asks a political opinion question, they just pick the person who agrees with them the most as having the best answer. What's the point? Very rarely do people seem to listen to what the other opinions are, but instead they act like the other side is namecalling.

Just to prove my point, about how the politics board works, I'm going to do the same thing.

Alessandra - At least 50% of the time I see them refuting every single opposing argument in additional details like this... some people do genuinely want to hear a variety of views, but it seems most want to just be right all the time.

Draciron - very good answer. I usually look at the science boards, and people there (besides the ones doing their homework) ask very good questions. It's very unfortunate that the politics section is filled with such hateful people, but then again the political climate right now is very divisive... one of the most popular pundits right now is Ann Coulter who makes a living bashing "liberals".

Dane - I think that is the major flaw of Yahoo answers. A question is on page one for maybe an hour or so, and between the people who write "idk" to get 2 points and people who cut and paste 10000 word entries from wikipedia, it's unlikely to get a good answer in that timeframe. If a best answer is chosen, then the question disappears into oblivion. Regular message boards or things like livejournal communities are much better places for topics that merit long discussions, like politics.

I don't think these people are actually looking for answers, they just want to make a statement and they hope everyone will agree.
It's the same in the religion category.

On political questions few here havn't made up thier mind. I have caused folks to delete political questions to remove my answer which refuted what they said pretty convincingly. Most of the time issues are not that cut and dry. It is interesting to get a topic going and see a variety of views. If we could get folks to quit shouting, and I'm sometimes guilty of it myself, then discourse would be possible. It's not the questions, nor the picking an answer that they agree with which is the problem in my opinion. It is the sheer hostility in which the question is asked. Some questions just from the phrasing just make you bristle even if you partially agree with them.

On topics that are not so contraversial people get good answers. I feel like I've helped a few folks with computers and playing guitar questions. I know I've helped some folks with pressing problems a time or two from the thank you notes. So it's not the concept, people get real answers here sometimes, other times nothing. My bridging router question for example. Not even an attempt. It was a pretty technical question. Still I hoped maybe one or two techies roamed here besides myself.

What does have to stop is the violation wars. In imigration there are contests to rack up the most violations for example. In politics, it's hard not to say something that is technically a violation given the content of many answers. Where does YA draw the line on bad taste and freedom of speech? Thats a headache I'm sure for them. Worse is the violation wars. I got tagged for nothing yesterday. Nobody can figure out what the violation was and YA won't even respond to my questions about what the violation was. It was a technical answer no less. Nothing political, no opinions too it. Can back every word up of it with facts. Provided a probably usefull link to the asker. Yahoo needs a way to address spurious violation reports. There also needs to be a recourse. People should only file a violation if it is really offensive in my opinion. It'd be impossible to flag every rules violation. The majority of questions do. Yet I once saw a question which was just a friendly how are you doing get two threats of violation. Yeah it technically violated the rules but compared the drival that floods many topics it was nothing. This leaves political agendas being enforced through bogus violation reports. Anyway stepping off the soap box :)

Now back to your question. I disagreed with you, does that mean I have no chance of getting best answer? How can you not pick mine after such an elequent disagreement LOL, especially after I put you on the spot :)

Absolutely true, and then they give the best answer award to the person who agrees with them (about that, where's mine? :D)
I have to admit it is an excersize in social studies to post something politically debatable, and watch the different parties react like like baboons in a cage. Everynow and then there's an intelligent answer too, but since these questions don't get any answers after about 40 minutes, the answers you get are limited to those who really have nothing intelligent to do and spend all the time "bashing"... Which is an excersize in philosophical masturbation, as was mentioned before.

You are right (mostly).

I've disagreed with the slant of the question and been picked as the best answer. However, I've seen that many best answers just agree with the question's point of view and don't really add anything.

Therefore, since I've made it to level 5, I've stopped rating best answers. It's a waste of time.

People ask questions for lots of reasons. The ones who tick me off are the ones who want you to make major life decisions for them. They're the ones saying, "Lead me." Then there are the ones who only want you to agree with them. They say, "Follow me." A few people really do want to start a dialog. They say, "Show me." Everybody's different. We have to take the "good" with the "bad" (unfortunately :).

To get an answer, to discover something they don't know, to see what people think about something... there are many reasons why.

Cause it's fun to see what people would answer to them and to learn ideas.
