The phenomenon of idols "drinking" milk could be explained scientifically by the theory of capillary action or the movement of liquids within spaces of porous surfaces due to surface tension, adhesion and cohesion. The reason behind people thronging temples with pots and pans filled with milk could be termed a "mass religious hysteria" caused by gullibility and scientific ignorance, eminent scientist Prof Yash Pal said.
The surface tension phenomenon can be witnessed in the ubiquitous water tap, where a drop of water stays suspended and drains away when touched, he said. Similarly, when a spoonful of milk is touched to the idol, the surface tension of the milk pulls the liquid up and out of the spoon, before gravity causes it to run down the front of the statue.
As the level of liquid or milk in the spoon dropped, it coated the statue beneath where the spoon was placed. A similar phenomenon had frenzied devotees making a beeline at temples on September 21, 1995 with some even carrying bucketful of milk for the Lord.

The milk drips down the side of the idol and forms a channel. When a spoon of milk is brought to the Ganesh idol, the milk in the spoon connects with the milk on the idol and the surface tension draws the milk out of the spoon and down the channel. This is the scitific reason behind okkk.if u want to believe this ok fine good but it is ur wish.

Read the post and just to add to this I was a teenager when this happened and still remember it clearly. I would agree to the scientific explaination of capillary action and surface tension etc if I would have seen this on a stone , marble or wooden idol.. how would they explain the situation in case of a solid pure silver status drinking milk placed on a silver bowl and the total milk used was still less than the total milk used.

Viscosity of milk. When the milk touches the surface of idol which is made of smoothened stone, it is is automatically drained on the surface and slowly trickles down the idol. This is interpreted as "Statues drinking milk"

you are talking of God and you are mixing it with science. Scientists will never agree with miracles, and religion will never agree with science. So it is best to let this topic rest as something inconclusive. There can never be proof either way, you see it. May be this is Gods way of showing his supreme command over things and this universe.
