I've found a great apartment to rent, which has been totally redone after a fire one year ago. Landlord says that every wall and floor has been professionally cleaned, yet there is still a distinct smoke scent, especially in the wooden floors. Then again, the apartment has been unused for a year, and the windows mostly shut. Will the smoke go away if I move in and air the place? Any experiences? Thanks!

There should be no odour if the restoration work was done right. And no it won't go away but you will get used of the smell, like a smoker can't smell the cigarettes they smoke but a nonsmoker can, you will find other people smelling this even from your close.Wall washing and cleaning in a smoke damage is for removing the soot so you can prepair for repair and remove what is damaged. This does not eliminate the odour. You can seal a smoked damaged area with a prime coat of "KILZ" then restore to finish but any char should have been removed. It is possible that the flooring should have been replaced because one possability is the soot could be on the underside of the flooring simply by the fire department hosing to extinguish the fire, the water would have seeped between the floor boards mixed with soot. This could not have been cleaned without lifting the floor.Without seeing the damage I would say it was not restored properly or something was over looked and missed. There are specific procedures to restore smoke, fire, water, flood etc... damages that insurance companies and their contractors follow, So who done this repair? If it was through the insurance then the owner should call and complain, they have to fix this problem. If it was done by the owner then they didn't do it properly and they should repair this problem. An "ozone machine" will work to remove this odour but it may be only a temporary solution, again without seeing the damage I can't determine a solution, but I would say no to the aptartment if I didn't want to tolerate the odour until it is repaired.

much experience here , when there is ever smoke damage is gets inside the wall and should have been repaired when the cleaning was performed , if it had major smoke damage it is where you can't get to it, ok, the company Franklin, (could be coming from anyplace)make a Oder digest-er that will eliminate the smell ,soap and water will not do the trick, also you maybe getting smoke form another part of the structure, also if its been down awhile it should be gone so this means it still has fire damage somewhere) air spaces between places it my not be in your place OK, it will go away but it take a very log time , but if you know where to look it can be eliminated with Franklin Oder die jester, (made for Mal Oder's and smoke damage sold at professional cleaning supplies , but on a another note the owner should have never rented the place until it was free of the stench, call the city and they will come and inspect it free and if UN livable they will make the owner replace you in a different unit or building at his expense do live with a uncomfortable Oder you don't half too OK, take care, and call building and safety in you area, you have renter rights

We have a local company called Pac Specialties (they MAY have a web site), they carry a bubble-gum scented product used to remove smoke odors but I can't remember the name of it. It's some type of industrial deodorizer.
You MAY also want to contact your local Fire Department. OURS has some kind of spray which eliminates smoke odors.
GOOD LUCK!!

White vinegar in a "plant mister bottle" and also you in basic terms walk round and target in direction of the popcorn ceiling, and likewise the drapes, curtains, even flat(or mat) painted walls, and likewise the carpets. With a mild mist and walk backwards out of the rooms. Now provide the room a 1/2 hour for the vinegar to evaporate(because it evaporates it takes the smell with it - any smell because that's a mushy acid which will carry an smell atom with it. It does not stain because you in basic terms misted the room.(not soaked the walls or fabric) So; what did you not wash? Curtains, drapes, wall to wall carpeting, popcorn ceiling(and the list is going on). Now I cook, and a number of my dishes contain a warm wok and Brussel sprouts. One can't answer YA questions once you acquire a 5 minute dish cooking on a purple warm element(so i realized) And BS smells like all different BS even as it burns. certainly a woodland hearth smells mild in evaluation. Rotting raw meat does not even evaluate. impolite does not initiate to describe it. and clearly it changed into wintry climate. . oftentimes in the spring and summer and fall months you leave each and each of the domicile windows open so as that the breeze dilutes it and includes out to the outdoors. Works in simple terms even as that's livable outside. . in the wintry climate, even as that's freezing chilly. domicile windows are staying closed reason "i love a heated domicile" yet am not in touch in paying intense heating costs because of open domicile windows. immediately even as moist it smells like vinegar, which isn't large. 1/2 hour and also you ought to't scent the vinegar or the smell both. you may also initiate cooking cabbage or beets in a large pot or you ought to do a self lobotomy and disconnect the means to sniff something Smoke? what smoke?
