I read several comments pertaining to this question, and many believe that no nation has ever ruled the world; however, I disagree. The United States right after World War 2 dominated the political, social, and financial sectors of the world. If I recall, America ruled the Corporate industry worldwide for several years after WW2, because we destroyed all our competitors. America being an Empire has ruled the world in the past, it was only for a few years, but nonetheless, we ruled the world.

Quote: "Theoreticaly the USA currently rules the world"
That's one dumb theory.
No nation or empire in the last 2000 years, or before that time has ever controlled the whole world.
The British empire was rather extensive but could never claim to ruling the whole world.

i'm an Indian. And I belive miss.andigee2006 is right. Indeed it was the British who ruled a greater part of the world. The empires of the old never ruled as much as it did.
When RomanEmpire came to power it ruled the entire of the europe and some parts of the dark continent(africa). Alexander did conquer the whole of europe and a greater part of asia. even many other power full nations and empires did it the same way.
But all this time america was still undiscovered. and even alexander didnot know about the british isles. the only empire to ever set foot on it is the roman empire. that to it entered the isles at time when the rome was failing, hence it wasn't really able to conquer it completely.
My country India was a closed door to every foreign invader it was naturally protected. The great pamirs knot and all the greater mountain ranges including the mighty Himalayan range defended my country. that was one reason why no ruler of india was even ever able to conquer any outer lands.(a story exists about a king named tuglak who sent an army of 0.1million across himalayas to conquer china and about 10 soldiers returned back alive without even reaching half way to their target).Even alexander the great had failed to conquer india(some belive that the long journey from home made his army homesick and weak, the climate was Knew and unadaptable, etc. but if history was reconsidered many locals supported him and the heros of india Chanakya and ChandraGupta were the main reasons why alexander failed in India).
But after all this the British is the only foreign rule to have ever imposed in India. And after India fell to the British Throne that is when the whole or a major part of asia fell to the British.
And the British also ruled a major part of the new world(america).
its empire stretched from north to south and east to west.
This was the reason that it was once Quoted:"THE SUN NEVER SETS IN THE BRITISH EMPIRE ".
the Britons ruled my nation with an iron fist and the scars it left still exist here in India.
And coming to the conclusive part the Americans neither theoritically nor mentally ever ruled the world and are not ruling it now either. Its always their hypocracy that rules. The americans bully the world and they don't exactly rule it. They are just kids with nukes.
the british once bullyed the world too.But there was more honor in it.

From a historical point of view 2000 years ago when the known world limited itself to the Mediterranean basin and northeastern Europe the following have ruled the world:
The Roman Empire, The Byzantine Empire, The Frankish Empire(Charlemagne). Afterwards after the exploration of Asia and Africa begun and thru the 1400 followed as rulers The Ottoman Empire, The British Empire, The Spanish Empire and The Portuguese Empire.
Towards the modern times main rulers appeared The Soviet Union and The US. Today even the USA is not the ruler anymore,
cause the centre of power shifted and enc-lined to Vienna to the OPEC headquarters.
But despite of this history all those men and women who kept their minds independent and free and also their souls and fought against us and soviet and other empires and kingdoms and republics propaganda.
Sorry I forgot something: NO NATION HAS EVER RULED THE ENTIRE POPULATION AND TERITORY OF THE PLANET EARTH!
NOT EVEN THE USA, OR UK, OR SOVIET UNION AND TODAY'S RUSSIA AND NOT EVEN GERMANY WITH IT'S THREE REICHE'S OR FRANCE'S FIVE REPUBLICS AND ...

I disagree about the US ruling the world. No nation in history has ever come close to ruling the world. Many nations have dominated continents in history, but none (Australia aside) has completely controlled a single continent (much less the world).
No nation has ever controlled Europe & China at the same time.
No nation has ever controled all of the Americas at the same time.
Even if, for the sake of argument, when say "dominate" the world instead of "rule" we will find that there was always a powerful counter to whichever nation we put forward.

None, the world as we all understand it today is a fairly recent concept. There have been quite a few nations who ruled their world until something came along and destroyed it.
As for the US ruling the world - do you really think so?
I could agree on the statement of the US manipulating the world to their own ends, but they don't send troops all over the world at the drop of a hat, that was a British Empire thing.

No one has ever ruled the world. Some like to think they have.
The largest colonial empire in history was the British Empire (and look at us now, boo hoo). Economically the US and Japan are very influential but neither of them rules the world. And hey, have you ever notice how China is producing so many things like 90% of all the toys!

Even Pinky and the Brain have failed to conquer the world. The largest empire in history (British) was still not the whole world. As far as the USA ruling the world im sure youd like too but sadly there not inteligent enough

None. When Rome ruled the Mediterranean, China ruled the Orient.
When Spain pretty much ruled the Americas, they didn't rule Europe or Asia.
When Britain had colonies around the globe, France, Germany, and Holland did also.
The United States has come closest... but through economic incentive and other people's desire to imitate, not through coertion.

The USA rules the world?Maybe you should let the other 200 countries know about it.No nation has ever ruled the world, many have tried, but they always ended up being defeated because it's impossible to have eneough men & all the logistical support needed to defeat so many countries.
