How come the matching solitaire games get to call themselves "Mahjong" when it isn't real 4 player mahjong?

Question. I get very annoyed, because virtually everyone around me thinks that mahjong is the tile matching game, when real mahjong from China/Japan is the Four player version, kinda like Gin Rummy. I think it is false advertizing that they call the games "mahjong" when it only uses the tiles.
Nobody makes a solitaire card matching game and calls it "Poker", so everyone knows what Poker is, or at least isn't confused about it.

Note: just because the game uses mahjong tiles doesn't mean it can be called "mahjong". Does a solitaire card game mean it gets to be called "Poker" or "Blackjack" even if they use the same cards?

A standard 52-card deck can be played for lots of games, therefore each game has been given its own name. A 52-card deck is referred to as "playing cards" - they're not called "poker cards." Mahjong tiles, on the other hand, are only used for two games - the four player version and the solitaire. Both are referred to as mahjong because of the limitations of the tiles. Furthermore, very few people play the four-player mahjong in North America for a reason you mentioned - gin rummy. Why play a confusing version of gin rummy with expensive tiles when you can play with cards? Hence, why mahjong solitaire has prevailed as the game referred to as "mahjong."
