They do allow people to communicate from a lot of places they couldn't before.
I find my mobile phone useful in both my business and my personal life.
However I got along a lot of years without one.

Just think about this example ---
When you board a long distance train or bus in theose non-mobile days, all you could do was to give a call to your home that I am coming home. There is no news of you until you reach home. Now you can even tell home where you are, when you will reach, when do you expect someone to arrive at station to receive you, etc, etc.
It is the any-time connectivity that a mobile provides you, provided there is network coverage. (But the same can be bad because your boss can also reach you all the time!)

They allow people who would normally say "Hello" to each other on the street have a legittimite excuse to ignore EVERYONE around them.Which I'm not saying is a bad thing altogether..
It has led to a certain type of mobile abuser that I call..
The,"Hey,I'm talking on my mobile about 20 db too loud
to a cell phone that's turned off because I'm too afraid to interact with people at starbucks" abuser.
You KNOW you've seen them before,maybe even busted one.I know I have.
So that's ONE merit,The sheer comedy of it all!

-it allows to communicate with other persons no matter how far h e is
-it is convinient to handle and can be taken any where with ease
-with gprs connection it helps to check emails etc
