No, registration is free. it just gets you access to The Sims 2 website, so you ca download content (clothes, houses, etc.) and use the BBS.

Go to Start>>Programs>>EA Games>>The Sims 2>>Electronic Registration. Follow the instructions. You don't have a username, so you'll set one up there.

All you need for registration is the Serial Numbers of the Disc, which is located on the Case. It'll be 25 numbers. You can also register each expansion pack (when and if you get them) using the same username & password.

Alternately, you can go to:
https://account.ea.com/oreg/selectgameplatform.jsp?surl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ea.com&site=eaco&app=oreg&curl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ea.com&prodid=OREG&sls=2&locale=en_US&ipath=12&skin=oreg
to register it.

If you're asking about how to play The Sims 2 online.. you can't..... that feature doesn't exist. The Sims 2 is a one-player game..... period.

HOWEVER, if you actually bought the game, and have a valid CD key, then what you can do is click on your start menu and go to -> EA GAMES -> The Sims 2 -> Electronic Registration you can automatically set up an account with EA games and register your game with them.

The reason I'm suggesting the automated online registration is so that you don't have to manually enter that huge serial number (since you already entered it when you installed the program)

For whatever reason, I've never gotten an original EA game to correctly register... I've had to use the automated registration each time.

Once you do that, you'll be eligible for downloads/uploads of custom content on the main Sims 2 webpage at http://thesims2.ea.com/

They have a lot of freebie downloads (new items, new places, character models) that are both official and user-made.

Registration is totally free, as are account creation, downloads and uploads. The only cost is your original game. In other words, if you downloaded and/or cracked The Sims 2, you won't even be able to register for that.
