I think it's holiday designed to fatten the wallets of corporations. You should be kind to the one you love on any day, not just a holiday!

Valentines day is overrated! It's just a way for businesses, especially florists & greeting card companies to make a bundle. Florists even increase their prices during that time, to benefit from a holiday devoted to lovers. Some people take this day so seriously and they really shouldn't. it's not that important like your birthday or christmas. I think the importance we place on it, comes from when we were kids. Remember the big v-day party in grade school, when you passed out all of your cards? When you become an adult, that day still has significance. i think it's a cute holiday but - When you're with the person you love, everyday is valentines day!

Valentine's day is just another saint's feast day. In many parts of the world, different places celebrate various days in honour of the saints whose feast days those are. For example, St. Nicholas' feast day is December 6th, and, in many parts of the world, children are given a boot with candy or whatnot in them, much in the same way as kids are given stockings at Christmas. Some places celebrate the feast of St. Anthony (June 13th). You can bet they do in Padua. We all know about St. Patrick's day as we do St. Valentine's. They are almost universal. What we don't realize, though, is that we are to celebrate all love, not just romantic love on that day. St. Valentine secretly married couples once a Roman emperor had made marriages illegal. I can't recall all the details, but I believe letters he had written were signed "Your Valentine" and that is why we call our beloveds our valentines on that day.
As for what I think about the commercialism of this day, it's as appalling as the commercialism of everything else. I specifically instruct my husband to buy me no flowers or chocolates on that day and that I don't need any gifts. I much prefer spontaneous surprises on days when nothing is expected.

St. Valentine's Day was started to commemorate the life of a great saint (check out online articles about his life). It's original purpose was to remind us to love God and love each other sacrificially (not romantic love, but a charitable, giving love for all people).
What modern culture has done with the day disgusts me. Love isn't about commerce or materialism. Yes, it's a good reminder to do something special for my wife, but we shouldn't need one day set a side for that. We should remember to do things like that all the time.

I can't speak for other people, but I HATE Valentine's Day. One more exhausting day to remind me that I have no one. I can't stand the roses, flowers, cards, gifts, chocolates, or the balloons. I hate the entire event. Not hard to guess why. I never have a date, some one always assumes I'll babysit for them while they go out. My co-workers constantly come by my desk showing off their gifts and it makes me sick. I'm a Valentine's Day Scrooge and proud of it.

I think it is ridiculous. Valentine's Day is just a way for people to make money. I am married and we have never celebrated Valentine's Day. It's pointless. The day we celebrate our relationship and love is our anniversary, not someone's pre-determined day.

I hate it! And not because I don't have a boyfriend ot husband. I don't like it because of the commercialism of it. Love shouldn't have a special day...it should be everyday. Girls expect gifts and guys feel obligated to get the "perfect" gift. There have been fights between couples because of a stupid box of chocolates or stuffed animal or whatever. There's just too mush pressure I think.
