There are many reasons why Ukrainians hate Russians, I am not sure of the other way around. But I would guess by saying if someone hates you, you probably hate them too. They aren't going to give you many reasons to like you. Anyway, there are lots of reasons, here are some points.

Immigrants: If you are talking to Ukrainian Immigrants, they are even more likely to hate Russians. The times when they could leave were times of conflict. And the people that hate the most are more likely to leave. If you don't mind the Russians, you might not go through all the trouble of leaving your homeland.

Culture: They have their own unique cultures and language. However, while within Russia and USSR rule they were usually officially forced to learn and use Russian language, laws and culture.

Conquered: Ukrainians have been under the rule of several countries. They were trying to be independent after world war 1. But they were taken over by Poland. Russia then went to war with Poland, and they divided the Ukraine at the end of it. Thus, the roots of the Ukraine are one of the many conquered people of Russia, not an Ali.

Stalin: He was one of the top murderers the world ever saw. The Ukraine had plenty of farm land. However, they found themselves growing lots of food yet many were starving to death, as the food was required to be exported to feed all of the USSR. Many rebelled. Between starvation and executions millions of Ukrainians are said to have died. Probably around 3 million people died.

WW2 - When Hitler invaded, the USSR strategy was Scorched Earth. They would fight, but only when the enemies supply lines were stretched thin. Basically retreating out of Ukraine, leaving the land and the people unprotected for Hitler to take. I am not sure if that mattered to them, the initial reaction was for Ukraine's to welcome the Nazi's in as liberators, until the killing started. The other part of it was to leave nothing of value. Everything was destroyed by the retreating Russian army.

When the Nazis were in retreat, the USSR was more of a conquering country. Ukraine was not really in much of a different position than Poland, Hungary and East Germany. It was taken over. About the only difference is it had been in that position before the war.

Chernobyl: Ukraine is home to the worlds worst Nuclear disaster. You have to assume they would see this as Russian technology and Russian procedures that created the problem.

Today and Political meddling: Russia is on it's own, but a little nervous. They have been accused of meddling in other former USSR countries politics and elections to try keep Allies. The worst was in the Ukraine. Russia backed a candidate in the election, and many of the older population who spent decades under their rule voted as they were told. He eventually lost. And the popular candidate ended up being poisoned during the whole thing. Russia is blamed for that, but I don't think they ever proved it.

I am not sure. I taught English in the Czech Republic and it was like that there too. Perhaps it is because former Soviet Union controlled them for so many decades.
