I go to a school away from home, and have been taking my home-built desktop computer to school for the last year. The spec is quite good (3ghz, 300gb, 1gbRam). But i have now been given a laptop, which has reasonable spec (Centrino-duo, 1.6ghz, 80gb, 1gb). I do alot of sound processing and some CAD/CAM work, so it is quite processor heavy.
The question is do i take the laptop, desktop or both?

It depends on your effort overhead lugging the desktop to school all the time. If it's a regular trip and you don't drive, then I suggest laptop for the obvious portability advantage. Conversely, if it's once a term and you drive then the desktop gives you extra grunt for minimal effort. I know how resource heavy some of these applications can be - and that will be something that gets worse as time goes on.
How about you take the laptop for a month ot two and see how it plays out for you, and if you're spending frustrating amounts of time waiting for the bus (as it were) then return to lugging the desktop around and save the laptop for weekends at boring relatives houses?

Whatever you do make sure that you sit correctly, with the screen at the right height and for best posture use an external mouse (and maybe a wireless keyboard to get really comfy!)
The desktop will give you a less stresfull time for working I think with the bigger, faster processor, however if you want to chill and surf (and ask and answer!) take your laptop too!
Above all it's school - work hard play hard and enjoy your time - it doesn't last long!

The Duo will handle CAD/CAM better than a single core 3Ghz.
I'd take the laptop, it is lighter and easier to carry.

The laptop sounds good. It might be easier to move around with that. It really depends how awkward it is to travel.
Take both. I assume you get a lift in your parents car.

If i were you, just bring both then syncronize the data between the PC and the laptop so that when you leave you can work on you laptop but when you go back you continue working on your PC.

Both are great specs. You don't need both with you. My response would be to just take the laptop.
