Develop a portfolio of what you have done during your college years. For me during the summer I made contacts with companies close to my major and then provided them with a sample of my works.
Resumes today are not enough when it comes to getting the dream job. You have to show them that you will bring something new to the company.

Reader asks, "I am in college.
WHAT CAN I DO TO GET A SECURE JOB AFTER I GRADUATE?"
superbooks1@yahoo ANSWERS:
Well, this question can be expanded on to be more specific, because the answer will be different depending on exactly what the reader is asking.
What can I do to get a secure job after I graduate OR What can I do to get a safer secure job after I graduate?
First - to get a secure job, first thing to look at is the size of the company, the number of employees and how long the company has been in business.
It's a general rule that new businesses need at least five years to remain in business or to succeed. So if you apply for a job with a small company that has been in business only one year, your job is not as secure as if you apply for a very large corporation, such as the Chase Manhattan Bank or Con Edison Electric Company.
The number of full time permanent employees also will tell you how secure your job will be. Companies that have large turnover and that have no long-term employees would not be a sign that you would have a secure job there.
Look at the branches of the company , for example, a company that has offices in ten states, perhaps might be more secure than a company that has only one office in one state.
NOW, how to find a SAFER secure job?
If you ever apply for a fast-food job, you would need to be sure that you never work closing or opening hours of that job --if you are living in a larger city. Most times, when these businesses are being held up at gunpoint, the robberies are done during opening and closing -when there are not many customers or witnesses around. Another thing that makes these companies or jobs unsafe for young people is that the doors that should be locked all the time --usually are OPEN and unlocked. This jeopardizes the safety of everyone working there. (For example, that episode where those young people were murdered in McDonald's a few years back, the robber got in through the door that should have been locked. Someone let them in through that door AFTER HOURS , and then they were murdered).
So when you are thinking of a secure job, think safety also, because no job is secure for you if you are dead.
These are reality based ideas , based on experiences of young people living and working in larger cities.
Other ways to find safe, secure jobs --
Check your government jobs, for city, state and federal jobs. Find the newspaper that lists the government jobs and apply for as many as you can find. These jobs are more secure , generally than private sector jobs.
Look for long-term things in corporations. If the company is flighty in any of it's experiences (for example, if their new experiments or products keep failing, that's a sign that perhaps a job will not be secure).
Stay away from FAD jobs --jobs that come into existance because of brand new products or brand new services.
The bottom line is that you look for these things:
Large companies with great number of employees (First check the news and listings to make sure this particular company is not laying off great numbers of employees) .
Large companies that have been around for at least ten years.
Large companies that have a large number of employees.
Companies that offer life and medical insurance for their employees. (If your employer is not providing this for you --then possibly your job is not too secure) . A good company will invest money in their good employees.
That's how you find a secure and safer job.
Check the yellow pages. Find a company that you'd love to work for. Check out the history of the company on the web. Then apply by sending a cover letter and a resume.
You do not have to see a job advertisement to apply for a job.
Just send a letter detailing your experience and what you are seeking and what you can do for their company.
You can do it. Just use your imagination, and be professional in dress, language and in the interview.
Wear a good business suit , dress etc. Be clean cut. Be courteous . And be persistent.
Keep applying for jobs, no matter how many employees turn you down. Do not take turn-downs as personal things.
You just keep applying for those jobs, and YOU WILL SUCCEED!!
Good Luck!

Internships are your keys to success. If not, stack your resume with volunteer opps, and relevant work experience.
Network with everyone you know. Most jobs are not what you know, but who you know. That's not to say that qualifications won't get you anywhere, but the world's not fair...
