What is happening to America? People just can't seem to spell simple words. Don't know the difference between their and there or you're and your and it just gets on my nerves. Are we a country of illiterates? Who's teaching our kids at school? Just reading most of the questions from this medium I can tell whether you're smart or stupid. So please, you people who could not spell or speak well do me a favor and go back to school.

It's not the grammar that's getting worse, people are just getting lazier... and it's not just America love. The only reason I check my grammar is because I'm a perfectionist and it's become a habit because I have nothing better to do than write stories in my spare time. People don't do that any more. People hurry everything.
And, yeah it's not too bad, you can tell the mood of a person by their grammar and spelling...it's not like English isn't their first language. It's not mine, can you tell?

As an educator, I have learned that people often write the way they speak. When people are not sure of how to spell a word, they will spell the word the way it sounds. You asked who is teaching our kids at school? Well teachers can teach, but it up to that child to take in what is being taught. Teaching does not begin in school and stop at school. Teaching and learning is an all day lesson. We as parents have to learn how to reteach and implement the lessons being taught at school in our households.

Another thing is that many of the parents are using grammar incorrectly, therefore the child is learning incorrectly. If the parent ask, "Where is it?" that child too will learn how to end sentences with prepositions. Or if "y'all" is used around the house oppose to "you all" then that is the vernacular the child will use.

I do not think America has become ignorant, just more so relaxed. We as parents and teachers do need to work harder at educating a smarter tomorrow.

I think slang and instant messaging programs have a big effect on spelling and on speech. There are people who really don't care how they spell a word and they don't use rules for words like their, there, they're and it's, its and so on. People think that why do we have to spell right, the point is that we can communicate. That's the problem! That's just an excuse for not wanting to even try. My heritage is hungarian and I was born there too but I went to school in the US for 6 years and I'd have to say that my writing, spelling and sometimes speech was much better than of those who were actually born there, considering that english is my second language. This is my opinion.

I am not trying to be mean, because I do agree that most people can't spell nowadays, but the first part of your question is bad grammar. I agree though, there are a lot of people who can't seem to spell on here, although I wouldn't go so far as to call them stupid. I even asked this same type of question once, under a different yahoo account. I ended my question with the question "Now how many of you were looking really hard to find one misspelled word in my question". It was really funny to see the people who got angry when they read that and were actually doing just that. They usually got mad and said "You probably used spell check". I did get one person though who was open about her not knowing how to spell well, and I respected that she could laugh about it. English and Spelling were always strong subjects for me, although I am not sure why. LOL, my dad can't spell to save his life!! Another problem I have noticed on here is that when people don't agree with you, they tend to curse you out and call you names. It seems like no one can disagree without insulting anymore.

"Why can't most people spell?" Hmm... that makes a little more sense to me.

We don't capitalize or spell check everything because we're not in a classroom. We're just talking to each other. Honestly, if someone asked you, "How you doing today?" you would tell them, "ahem, it's actually 'how ARE you doing today?'"

Also, "can't use the right grammar?" is not a complete sentence or question.

You are action-packed with stupidity.

your toally reight (kidding). Some are typo's and some, I think come from a culture of quick IM messaging and online chatting, where language has been reduced to the quickest common denominator and spelling and grammar are not important anymore.

They are being trained for manual labor. Literacy tends to advance freedom. We can't have a bunch of free men running around, can we? their minds must be allowed to stagnate. They must be discouraged from reading and encouraged to watch TV. That way they will believe what the TV says, rather than reading the law and the constitution for themselves. that way they will be unable to cite the laws and the constitution when their rights are violated. "if you do not know your rights, you have no rights".
