eBay doesn't specialize in having the best deals on just one thing, because it sells literally thousands of different items - from cars to underwear to antiques!

The key is to figure out something you want, and investigate:

+ the prices on eBay (remember that auctions will end up costing more than the starting bid, while "Buy It Now" deals may either be a better deal in the long run, or a worse deal than an auction - it really depends)

+ how many sellers are offering it (more sellers mean better deals, fewer sellers mean worse deals) - for example, eBay doesn't have a lot of good deals on rare books, so I buy all my books from http://www.alibris.com

+ where the item is coming from & shipping policies (stuff from Japan, China, or Korea is often dirt cheap, but the shipping can be very costly - and beware of anything that you can't find from a US or Canadian seller)

Basically, you need to browse eBay and find the average price for the item you want - usually half-way between an auction price and a "Buy it Now" price, plus shipping - and then look at other sites, as well as offline, to see if there's a better deal. There just isn't much of an easier way to go about it.

I suggest you either try a "shopping" site that searches lots of internet stores to find the lowest prices (I've pasted some below) or do a new question at Yahoo! Answers for the exact item you're looking for.

Anyway, in my experience (keep in mind that there's a zillion things I've never even tried shopping for on eBay) there are always good buys on fashion, jewelry, DVDs, CDs, any type of accessory (I don't just mean 'purses & belts', I also mean accessories to other objects - for example, cases for iPods) and anything that you've always thought was totally overpriced (like wireless headphones, in my case).

So keep us updated & happy browsing!

You can find a good deal on just about anything on Ebay, but sometimes you can find even better deals on www.craigslist.com. I've been buying from ebay for years and never been ripped off.

It depends on what you like. I think that my 2carats of champagne diamonds (excellent color and clarity) for under 20 bucks was a great buy, but you might not be into diamonds and gemstones. Find whatever you really like and see if you can get a great deal, then it's a great buy!

If you need it and can not find it less expensive somewhere else then it is a good buy. However, I have seen things bid up for greater prices than they could have been purchased outright at other sites.
