Yes, sound is independent and travels regardless.

Have you seen Osama Bin Laden? I guess no. Bu do you think he exists? I guess yes.
Even though you haven't perceived a thing, you can logically prove that the thing exists. The human knowledge can draw logical conclusions regarding things that are distant in time and space.

That's why you can look at Tom Cruise and say, "Hey because there is Tom Cruise, there must've been his father, there must've been his grandpa, and there must've been his great grandpa, and so on". Get it?? You could draw conclusions on things which are not present now, which are not present here!!

And to those who are saying that the tree won't sound because you won't hear it.....My friends, making a sound and hearing a sound are two different things. There may be a sound and no hearing. As in the case of this question. On the other hand there may be no sound but still there may be hearing. That's the case of hallucination...when you say, "hell!! I am hearing sounds!!"

The asker's question is, "does it make sound". It is not "would you hear it". The tree would definitely make a sound, though there is noone to hear it.

So....the tree must make sound.

If a man washes the dishes, and no one is there to see him do it, did he in fact wash any dishes?

If a man makes a statement, and there are no women around, is he still wrong?

To answer your question, yes, the creation of sound is independent of the observation thereof. Something does not have to be heard to make a noise, it will make a noise regardless, because of the displacement of air etc.

Also, didn't you know, there are always some ears nearby in a forest, and though they can't testify to the sound itself, they need to hear in order to survive other animals and falling trees, so consider this question answered.

this question is actually answered in my biology book..here is what it says:

"perceptions, such as colors, smells, sounds and tastes, are constructions of the brain and do not exist outside it. so, if a tree falls and no one is present to hear it, is there a sound? the fall certainly produces pressure waves in the air, but if sound is defined as a perception, then there is none unless sensory receptors detect the waves and an animals brain perceives them"

sound exists whether somebody hears it or not. so yes it would make a sound... but... i don't think that's the right question... how does a tree just fall in a forest? somebody must have been there to make it fall...

That's easy, doesn't happen. I've never heard of anyone hearing a tree fall when nobody was around to actually see it. Maybe they heard something but how can they prove to me it was that tree?

Yes... and if a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman there to hear him, he is also still wrong.
