I could teach a 6 month course and not cover everything, but here is lesson one.
Create a new text file on your desktop. Type the following stuff in the text file, and call it .htm. Save the file, and double click on it.
This is my first web page!
Ok, now that is a web page. Tags are things like . Tags will often have closing tags. Different tags do different things. Right click on any webpage and select "View Source" to see the tags they use.
There is an Html book that I REALLY like that goes over a ton of stuff. It is a "Learn Visually" book, and has a TON of examples.

Even learning HTML isn't something you can do overnight. If all you want to do is make a simple site, you can use MS Word. Any document can be turned into HTML by selecting Save As Web. You can add pictures and links from Word. Then all you need is a place to publish it.
Obviously there is a whole lot more to web development. If it were simple, I'd be out of a job.
