I was so ready to leave my parents home when I turned 18, I signed up at a 'guaranteed rental associates' company. They said if I paid them $500 I would not need to have a credit check done to get an apt., and that they would pay the first , and last months rent. All I had to do was use their list of apt, or condos. The list had over 200 locations on it and was 65 miles away from the city that I currently lived in. In order to get my money back, I had to fill out 200 rental applications, and show proof that I went to every location! It took close to 3 weeks just to complete every application and when I went to the agency to turn in my proof, the office was closed down, and their phone number was disconnected!!! I felt like the biggest IDIOT in the world...but you live and learn!

Co-signing a $500 credit card for a friend who eventually moved to another state. By the time it was over, my friend had gotten a credit limit increase that I knew nothing about and I owed $1800 with late and over limit fees. It was not an intentional "rip off" but I ended up the victim. Do not co-sign for anyone (even family members) if you cannot to pay those debts in full. I have heard the warning time and time again but only from my experience did I learn first hand what the consequences are.
