Reasons are many, for some it is misery, failure, bad times and loss of vigour and enthusiasm.
And for some people the quest of finding happiness becomes the greatest unhappiness.
Good luck.

it could b anything....actually the ratio of being happy and unhappy varies from person to person ...it is more to deal with the individual choice, taste and preference and temperaments ...any simple thing could make no effect to someone but at the same time it may make the other one happy or sad .....in my view i thing it is the temperament which decides whether to take any thing simply or seriously, for instance if incase some one is in a good mood (rather he is emotionally secure) he would be able to take any diversity with an ease
and if someone is emotionally insecure he tends to get unhappy on every alternate incident happens to him ...ie missing a bus, having a argument with the colleguesor spouse

Self-Created Suffering is the main cause for humanity in general being unhappy... The unwillingness to let go of the past.

There always seems to be an excuse as to why we hang on to things that are gone and/or over.

I believe this to be the main cause for unhappiness in mankind and ultimately leading one to depression, and physical sickness as well.

It is subjective. What makes one man happy could be the cause of sorrow for others. It can only be surmised that when anyone is not allowed to be himself/herself, unhappiness follows.
