I plan to visit some places around Denver over the weekend. Any nice place around Denver, which is around 2-3 hrs from Denver downtown by Amtrak train would be great. Any suggestions?

Please note that I don't have car. So, I am looking at visiting places which can be reached by train from Denver Downtown.

The train service from Denver is geared towards people traveling long distances, not daytrippers. It is often late and you might have a hard time finding routes to get you to a destination and back in a day. I suggest you just tour around Denver and beyond - there are a lot of nice places you could explore without a car.

Check out www.rtd-denver.com for bus and light rail routes. You could take a bus to Boulder and check out a very nice town with shopping, restaurants and mountain parks for hiking. You could take the Light Rail to the last stop, Mineral and check out the Platte River Trail for beautiful views of the mountains or the wetlands, then stop at Littleton Downtown and tour the small historical area. You could take a bus to Golden and check out the "old west" historical area of town, even take a tour of the Coors Brewery. Or you could just hang around lower downtown Denver and enjoy all the shopping and bars in the hip part of town.

Amtrak currently has only one eastbound departure and one westbound departure from Denver each day. The eastbound California Zephyr #6 departs Denver at 7:25 pm and travels across the high plains to Fort Morgan. The westbound California Zephyr #5 departs Denver at 8:05 am and travels up through the spectacular Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the resort community of Winter Park. The trip to Winter Park takes two hours. If you have more time, a trip to the wonderful hot springs of Glenwood Springs takes five hours.

A weekend alternative to the California Zephyr is the Rio Grande Ski Train which runs to Winter Park in both the ski season and summer months.

If you want to ride a narrow gauge steam railroad in the summer or fall, the Grey Line offers a ten-hour bus tour from Denver that includes a ride on the spectacular Georgetown Loop Railroad. The aspen trees in the Front Range turn vivid shades of gold around the last week of September or first week of October.

I would suggest taking the Amtrak California Zephyr from Denver's Union Station to Winter Park. It is a two-hour train ride through a beautiful portion of Colorado.

Another option is to ride Denver's light rail system. A new major line opens in November. Check out www.rtd-denver.com

Um, everything? Come on, you're right in LoDo (lower downtown)! How could you complain! Right by the GIANT Denver Public Library, some of the best restaurants in town...everything! Only the really rich (and just barely middle-class) suburbs are on the outskirts of town. I mean, come on, everything that the tourists want to see is in Denver Downtown!

There are a couple of stops in the mountains, including Winter Park and Glenwood Springs. Or, you could head northeast to Greeley.

Your question is a little confusing as to whether you want things to do in Denver or out of Denver.

from union station you could easily walk to lower downtown (lodo) which as restaurants and bars and its just a good place to walk around. you are also close to the 16th street mall with lots of good shopping and interesting place to walk around. or you could take a bus to the nature and science museum. the bus pretty much goes anywhere. there are lots of options, it depends on your interests.
