I have a 1995 isuzu rodeo that i took to a local shop today to have an alternator belt and a thermostat replaced. After i picked my truck up i noticed it smoking from the muffler, which it was not doing before. Now when you get up to 50 mph it acts like it is having trouble picking up speed which it was also not doing before. The mechanic tried to tell me i have a bad oil leak, but i haven't had to put any oil in it. If anyone could give me some advice on what this might be and what the oil pressure should be i would greatly appreciate it.[single mother tired of being taken advantage of!]

Oil pressure in the range of 40 to 60 psi (pounds per square inch) would probably be normal from engine speeds over 1000 rpm (fast idle on up to max rpm) If your car has an oil pressure gauge you are fortunate. Most have idiot lite which only goes on when pressure is dangerously low.

Bad oil leak would mean oil dripping on ground. Look under car and see if oil is visible as wet pach or drips. If you are not sure what leaking oil looks like, pull out dipstick and rub some between your fingers and smell it. Then you can compare to any fluid leaking.

I assume from what you say you are capable of checking your oil level. Best to add oil when it is half way between marks on dipstick. Don't wait for it to be a quart low, it gets too hot when low, shortens oil life and causes excess engine wear.

Smell the exhaust. Smoke can be unburned gasoline (will smell like gas) or partly burned oil. Remove spark plugs, what they look like will tell you much. Dry black powdery shows unburned gas which means bad valves or faulty injector function, clean white to light brown is normal, oily black indicates bad rings or bad valve stem seals or rarely head gasket problem.

paul g's answer is probably incorrect since the shop would not remove the head without charging you (and telling you first if they are at all honest). It is a lot of work, would not be done without reason (to fix valves or replace head gasket).

first of all ur oil pressure will have no effect on picking up speed. the shop did somthing to ur car for it to run like this. they may be crooked and did something to it and dont want to addmit it cause u are a woman and will not do anything to them. what i would do girl is take it to another shop and ask them if they could look at it for u and let them know what happened that way when they find out what is wrong u have a good wittness as to the probem and from there can be determined if they are or are not at fault. i say it like that cause u have so many sensors on ur car and any 1 of them can go out with out any warrning or anything. it can just happen all of a sudden. so do that and let me know what happens please

before including oil, did you examine the oil volume on the dipstick? in no way upload oil except you're sensible you want to function some. intense oil volume can carry about gasket and seal mess ups. Oil stress and oil volume are literally not a similar difficulty. Low oil volume may reason a low oil stress caution. Low oil volume must be led to by using an oil leak - did you examine for one? Low oil stress must be led to by using a defective oil stress sending unit (maximum problem-free reason). yet another reason is a disconnected cord from the oil stress sending unit (my chum had that problem). If it contacts the chassis or engine block, it is going to reason the oil mild to go back on. Your automobile isn't the right age to have a wiped out engine or oil pump. yet those are also conceivable motives of low oil stress. in the adventure that your oil stress is amazingly low adequate, your gasoline engine will initiate to rattle like a diesel engine. Oil has a cushioning outcome that facilitates to quiet an engine.
