I am losing weight (finally!). At home it's easy, I just buy healthy foods and don't buy much. I eat out about once a week but the portions are huge. I know I can take a doggie bag home but then that food is calling me from the refrigerator and tempting me. Can I order half a meal? And will I have to pay the full price or half the price? Would it be rude to order half in front of friends?

Congratulations on working on living in a healthier manner. The portions are huge in a lot of restaurants, I guess that is part of the reason that we think we need to eat huge portions. I was brought up to "clean my plate," so that adds to the struggle. Some restaurants will serve a smaller, considered luncheon; portion of a meal if you ask the waitperson and explain that you are losing weight and cannot eat a full portion. Some restaurants will serve you a smaller portion, but may charge you the full portion price, as they consider it a special order. This does seem a bit unfair, but I would value feeling healthier over the few dollars. It is not rude to ask about being served a smaller serving, and your friends should be supportive of your successful weight loss. My friends and I, at least the "girls" have become very adept at splitting servings into two servings. You can also check out the appetizer section of many menus and find similar selections to the entrees in much smaller servings. You are spending your money in their establishment, you should be able to have the meal the way you want it. Just ask nicely, and you will probably get a positive answer 90% of the time. One of my friends and I went out this afternoon and had a "girl's" day, went to the hairdressers, and did a bit of shopping and then went to dinner in a local Italian place known for great food and large portions. We ordered one thin crust pizza, (supposedly for one person) I believe it was a nine inch crust. We ordered one dinner salad with roasted chicken, and had one dessert between us. We actually had 3 slices of pizza left, and she took it home to her fiance. He was happy with the "doggy bag," had some salad with it and was all set for dinner. So all three of us split a meal that was supposedly for one person. I don't believe in being hungry after a meal, but being overstuffed is just ridiculous. Best of luck with your new-found healthy lifestyle. Have a good night!

A lot of places are willing to serve you a smaller portion. Usually the cost is half price plus $1-2. Some places will charge a split fee if you share a meal. It never hurts to ask!!

No, you can't order half a meal, but you can ask them to put half in a doggy bag before they bring it out, or order from the side dishes.

You'll have to go to those restaurants who offer this service... but yes, I've seen menus which even give the prices for half a meal.

Some places allow half orders others not. If they don't ask if someone wants to split it with you.

This question is the very reason that most waitresses don't like to wait on women. Just order what is on the menu.
