Introduced at the beginning of the industrial revolution these were the foundations of mass production and assembly line manufacturing methods. Prior to this, a manufactured article was made from start to finish by the same person. By dividing the steps of manufacture into separate specialized functions, multiple workers could produce the product in less time, and the workers required less skill. This opened up the labor force and lowered the cost of manufacture because the simpler specialized task could be done by lower-paid workers, as opposed to skilled craftsmen.
