I agree with George.
Yet the term, and definition of "happiness" must be
determined internally by the author of the question.
"Happiness" and "joy" are by themselves what I feel we as humans, as people intrinsically strive for.
In other words.. we do not naturally seek and embrace the alternative. This is at best what most would describe as
"counter intuitive" to are very nature.
Happiness: The day you first look upon your new baby...
a gift from God.
The moment you are embraced by someone who is in tears..
proclaiming how, "you just saved my life" after a horrible accident.
The day your son, daughter looks you in the eyes, and thanks
you for "always being there for me" as they graduate.
When your brother which you have argued with, comes to you, and hugs you in front of your whole family...
and he says "I love you".
Joy: Same as above.. but just a bit different.
Knowing that what you said... a few years ago, made the
difference in somebodies life.
When you can look in the mirror.. everyday...
and be honest with yourself.
Your Mom calls you... instead of you calling your Mom.
Seeing the sun come up everyday, and remembering the
one's that are no longer here... the one's that died
way before their time...
and they knew that you loved them.
Buying Google stock at $85.00 a share when It was an IPO.
Hey now... laughter is everything!!
Never ever forget the laughter and joy you experiance
each day of your life... the choice is yours.
Happiness is a choice.
Belive me.
You have the power to make that choice.
Happiness is not handed to you....
you have to not only see It, embrace It..
more often than not...
you must "create It".

Making realistic goals and achieving them surely gives a moment of happiness and then you will have to look for another goal and try to achieve then failure make you disappointed. So this kind of a search got both. Happiness and unhappiness. If the person dealing with this high and low of feelings will surely sometime or the other go out of control. But, the actual happiness is reaching the state of neither happy nor unhappy in whatever one do, face or happens. But, only doing happens as an innevitable obligation without any feeling attached to that. That will be a real happy state.

Happiness is nothing but a state of mind. It does not depend upon what you have, whom you have,or what circumstances you are in. Happiness is not the exhilaration that we feel when we have what we want .Happiness is not just the adrenalin rush. It is a state of mind when we are in perfect peace with ourselves. When your mind is free of hatred, when you know who you are, when you are satified with what you have then happiness fills your mind. This happiness will never leave you and it will stay the same no matter any countless adversties that you'll have to face. Happiness is the peace that you feel in your mind. Just try to sit calm, stop all your thinking, concentrate on your breathing , stay like that for some time. The feeling that you experience then, is the True Happiness.

Do your duties without any expectation.
Do and forget.
Do only deeds which you like for yourself also. Never do anything wrong which you do not expect from others.
Live positive life. If you will not hurt any living beings, all will love you and you will be not only feel happiness but you will be pleased in your life. In India we feel a difference in pleasure and happiness. Pleasure is devine and happiness is materialistic.
Keep happy others you will naturally be happy and one day you will feel the real pleasure of life.

Don't confuse happiness with pleasure !
Pleasure is a result of external experiences (good food, alcohol, back rubs, sex....). It is a short term feeling of delight.
Happiness is much deeper thing. It comes from loving and caring of others. Happiness is enduring.

I've been happiest when I'm focused on something besides my immediate self. Helping other people in some capacity, studying, playing music, teaching, etc.

Its being content and appreciative of who and what you have in your life and enjoying it all as best you can. Its knowing yourself, and accepting that while noone is perfect, you have a lot to offer to life, both for yourself and your potential, and to your loved ones and friends.
