You're serious? Of this I am skeptical. Nonetheless...all righty...running is used to describe a state in which fluid is flowing from the nose. The same way the faucet in your sink can be described as "running". To say that something "smells" is to say that something smells bad. I can only assume the last word was dropped off for slang purposes, or to save precious seconds in stating the observation. Words can mean more than one thing, as is demonstrated by this mildly amusing instance.

great question,
like why do we park on a drive way
and drive on a parkway?
so, when a person nose "runs' they don't like that
so they chase it attempting to stop it from doing such.
After taking benadryl they fall asleep before someone
cooks dinner and they smell it in their sleep.
While dreaming the subconscious changes their thinking and the dreamer believes that it is pigs feet that they smell.
then the dreamer wakes up and confuses the dream world with your question.
does this make sense to you?
