so im 21 and moving to california in january. i plan on going to san diego state in a couple years but im going to a community college for a year or two. should it be the san diego area (south county, not north) or OC? im aware of the fact that its pricey, so other than that...what do you think is the way to go? im a laid back guy, the beach is a huge plus, just because its so different from my hometown. im a guy who loves to play music, watch and play sports (all kinds from baseball to hockey to tennis), and traffic-aside, looking for a nice laid-back college lifestyle. and whatever the weather may be like, it beats the you know what out of humidity and rain. the two might be so similar that theres no point in asking, but im looking for a local's persective. i was in both areas 2 weeks ago for 6 days and loved both. went everywhere from petco park in SD to the pier in huntington. just looking for some advice. thanks.

They are very similar. The only difference is the price, which you know already.
Personally, the OC does seem to have one plus and it is the fact that it is only an hour from LA and an hour and a half from SD. It may not be a bad idea to be close to LA in case you want the big city lifestyle on some weekends. There are so many distractions in LA that if you stay there for a while, there is a chance you would not want to go to San Diego.

I go to SDSU and I am a senior. WooHoo! Anyways, the local area schools have a tranfer agreement so that you get in even if you do not meet the GPA requirements....which keep going up. So I would go here in SD. It will guarantee you a spot at State. Also, alot of the majors have this thing called pre-majors and you can not apply for upper division classes until you have completed all the pre-major classes. I went to a JC in Menifee, CA (1hr north) and I "lost" a year, meaning I am a 5 year, because I could not apply for upper division right away because my JC did not offer the classes that were required. The SD JCs have all of those classes! Oh, you need to go to one of the San Diego City Colleges to have this option :)

Born and raised in south Orange County, but now living in San Diego. I would move to Orange County. My experiences, it is easier to get around, the beaches are less crowed (south OC, NOT north) You are an hour to LA and San Diego so you are very central.
Good Luck with your choice

San Diego is a much better place for a young person. Orange county is very WASP (upper) Middle Class families. San Diego is more cosmopolotian and much frendlier to singles.
If you are going to chose Orange County, Newport or Huntington Beach are the best choices.

I have lived all over San Diego. Currently i live in East county. Its better than i thought it would be. Out of all the Areas i have lived in, i like Chula Vista the best. But you get a lot of South San Diego haters on here. Chula Vista is Quiet, clean, safe and friendly.

Be ready for out of state tuition. If you wait two years you probably can establish residency. Tuition in community colleges is very low in California. If you like the beach then try Mira Costa College in the Oceanside-Carlsbad area. Lot of good CC's in OC. Golden West, Saddleback, Orange Coast and more. Good luck

I think SD and OC are very different. SD is more laid-back than OC. I am more an LA kind of guy, but Orange County is not really LA scene. So, I will probably choose OC over SD. It all depends on your taste.

San Diego. SDSU is a fun experience, community is great. If housing is too pricey, start at laid-back Ocean Beach and work your way up.

San Diego is the BOMB. You don't need to buy a house out here as a student; hook up with a roommate. Great weather, great atomosphere, and the people here are very laid-back and mellow and very friendly toward newcomers and tourists.
