If your spine is normal and healthy and you have a good anesthesiologist, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. The actual needle poke lasts only seconds, but they still have to thread the tubing in. That's the part that takes a minute or two. It's not painful though (at least, not as painful as the needle).

It only took me a few minutes for it all to end 1 poke and that was it. But what would really help you is when your doctor asks what level of pain you are experiencing always say a 8 or a 9 it can help you get the epeidural a lot quicker. If they say they can't give you the epidural because your're not dialted enuff just ask for some comfort medication that will help you sleep.

It should just take seconds but I have unique spacing in my spine and it took me 45 minutes and 9 pokes to get the needle in. My doctor said he never had such a difficult problem as he did with me. However, it is so worth it. Most women say that it didn't hurt at all. I would still get an epidural next time but warn the doctor of my crazy spine.

my son is a month old, so i remember very well. it did not take them long to put it in. a nurse stood in front of my to keep me as still as possible. after they start running the medicine, the anes. monitors the blood pressure, e.k.g. and pulse to be sure that everything is going well...
it really took the pain away from the contractions, mind you, i was almost 8 cm dialited when i had it...
good luck and i hope it goes well

it's very quick, you won't even feel it because of the contractions. An estegeologist puts it not the delivering doctor. If you do feel it , it will feel like a hard pinch.! I Had to get it because my body was in stress and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, and her heart was also in distress!!!!

if you are having very strong contractions - one on top of the other - it will take a little longer! mine took 10 minutes, but i was induced so my labor was crazy. i was having contractions every minute and 1/2 when i was only 7 cm dilated!
