Surveys don't earn you much money. I am a member of 5 survey sites and haven't earned over $100 per year.

Some can. If they ask you to pay to take their surveys, don't trust them...it's probably a scam. Also, there are some sites which say they pay you for surveys but are really paying you to sign up for offers and also take a survey.
I've taken surveys online for years, and have reviews of some of the better sites I've done this with here:

All of the ones listed are credible sites which do pay. None of them will make you a full-time income or anywhere near that. I am signed up for all of the ones listed and several others which I have yet to decide whether to include. I make an average of $10-$20 a month not including referrals (this is for very little time invested--2 or 3 hours at most--and I don't qualify for many of the paid surveys I am offered). I've found $1-2 per survey (in cash or points redeemable for cash and other rewards) is the norm. Occasionally I have gotten a $10 or $15 survey, or a free product to try and answer questions about. Surveys usually take around 10 to 20 minutes (but the higher dollar ones take longer).
One site not mentioned which I have heard good things about from others it www.surveydirect.com. I have not added it to the site yet because I haven't gotten any money from it myself--but that's because I use Mozilla as my browser and they require flash for most if not all of their surveys, which I can't run in that browser.
