The answer about right clicking the icon and properties and change icon is part of the process I use.

I take images from the internet and put them into a program that makes icon files. Those are the files I point to in the 'change icon' part.

The program I use is IconArt. It is freeware and it allows me to control the icon at several sizes. 16x16 is the size used for favorites in IExplorer. 48x48 is used for the desktop on my resolution. I like the 3 size icon file. All the sizes are stored in one file and it is good at importing.

I usually edit the file with a photo editor before I import it into IconArt, but IconArt has a way to zoom and crop the imports. It doesn't work as easy as a photo editor, but it works if needed.

It is easy. Right click on the icon, and select "Properties". Then select the "General" tab. Then select "Change Icon", and then "Browse".
