Nobody knows exactly how what we now call life got started. Harold Urey conducted a famous experiment years ago in which he showed that lightning in the early atomsphere would have made many of the chemicals necessary for life. Since it has been several billion years since life began, there are very few traces of early life. For a good recap of what we know, and what has happened since, see the reference.

If you look at the complexity of the universe in which we live, and are but a small part of, you cannot deny the role of a creator, or God.
Today, more and more, science is actually pointing TOWARDS the universe being the work of a creator, rather than away from it. In the past fifty years many scientific theories have come undone, in the light of new research, and new developments.
Not only that, but many of the theories accepted as FACT, today, when looked at more closely, contain enormous "loopholes" and blatant speculations.
Science itself, says that nothing can be taken as fact, until in can be scientifically prov-en- yet at the same time proposes the big bang and evolution as FACT- when they are not- they remain theory.
If all the popular theories and facts are examined closely, and together, as Lee Strobel did in his amazing book "The Case for a Creator" ( Zondervan) , its clear that the universe is the work of a omnipotent , omnipresent, Creator.
And that Creator- is GOD

I agree with art chic- that the "big bang" was the work of God.
Everything was created by God. God spoke "let there be light" and there was light- or as stated in "the case for a creator"
the universe suddenly exploded into light and life.

So yeah, there was a big "Bang" - and it happened because God told it to happen.

It depends on what side of acceptable logic you are with. It is god and will always be god ending up the creator of any theory or process that created life, nothing more, nothing less if you are close to heretic answers of random selection and time, genetic manipulation or any other answer which is scientific in nature. It is a wide open spaces, to borrow a line from the dixie chicks. Somebody has to be physically there when it all started and I'm absolutely certain, nobody among us did. I would even surmise that we are not unique in this universe. The mysticism attached to this question will drive mankind to the edge of the universe to search for the answer. That is hoping we don't annihilate each other in defense of our "god-given" religions.

One theory is that life arose from what are called "catalyst loops."

Catalysts are chemicals that help other chemicals react with each other, but are not used up themselves. If I understand this ttheory correctly, what may have happened is that a whole series of these catalysts were at work in the oceans before life began, making other chemicals react with each other... and, perhaps, making other *catalysts*, too.

Say you have five catalysts, named A through E. A reacts with certain chemicals, making catalyst B, which in its turn reacts with completely different chemicals from catalyst A, and makes catlyst C... all the way to E.

Now imagine catalyst E's job - is making catalyst A. Presto! A loop. This "loop" will make more of itself over time... thus showing that a characteristic of life can come from non-living matter.

Anyway, I'm not sure what happens after all these cataylst loops are running around in the seas, but maybe a real biologist will come along and help us understand how this works.

Hope that answers your question.

There are a lot of different theories, it just all depends on how YOU look at each one. If you strongly believe in God, then to you, you probably believe that God created all life. There is also the Big Bang Theory, which if you strongly believe in science and scientific evidence then that is what created life. There are MANY threories as to the story of life, and its up to you to believe what you want. I personally believe in 2 theories in 1. I believe that GOD created the Big Bang theory to start life so in a sense it was a combined effort. I've heard the other theories, and I've seen the Scientific Evidence behind the Big Bang Theory but I also believe in God and I believe he created the world and all life, but I don't think it was as simple as "POOF" and there was life. I believe God created a way for life to "spark" on its own, i believe that God came up with the Big Bang to start off life, and created evolution in the hopes that change would occur and create new life. (ex. dinosaurs evolved into modern day turtles, alligators, etc) I believe that the Big Bang created life, but I also believe that it was God who created the Big Bang.

You asked so here's my honest opinion. God created life. Do you really think a big bang made our bodies be able to heal themselves? How about the way a baby develops in a woman's body...do you not consider that a miracle. My opinion is that no big bang could have created all the life forms that we have on the earth.

I did some research on this stuff and could well possibly conclude that some extraterrestrials had something of a cross between a species developer and a DNA cloner in which they put in some of their genes and got us made. Guess, if we evolved, why don't many animals do today?? it was they who made us and implemented a brain with a preprogrammed philosophy that made them our gods! that's why today's science can't get to the root of our origin nor can it go beyond this universe. they created us and kept us at a sufficient distance so that we might never get 'em.

If you deny that it was God, answer this... who created the spark? Who created whatever created the spark? Think about it.
