Add a tablespoonful of citric acid (should be available at the supermarket) to the water and boil. You may have to repeat this once. The effect is amazing - it works much better than vinegar and doesn't smell. Not toxic.

A mixture of half water and half white vinegar left in a kettle overnight will get rid of limescale as effectively as any chemical remover. To remove the odour afterwards, boil fresh water in the kettle a few times. Let this water cool down and you can use it to water the plants.

Limescale is an alkali.
To get rid of it use any acid.
vinegar is an acid and will do the job - but it's not very strong.
Buy a de-scaler from the Supermarket - they come as a liquid - and follow the instructions (basically add to water in the kettle and wait!) It's not expensive.

IOnce you have removed limescale... I recommend vinegar dilute with boling water... keep a clean washed sea shell the strong flat ones are the best inside the kettle and rinse kettle out every week.. it will reduce the limescale... alternativley... move house to a softer water area.!!!!!

Prevent the limescale from forming in the first place by getting a water conditioner fitted to the incoming water supply. basically its coils of wire wrapped around the copper pipe and a small electric current is passed through them. You can clean your kettle but imagine what is happening to the central heating boiler

White vinegar works best. half fill your kettle with water bring it to the boil then add 200-300mls of white vinegar, leave for about 20 mins or until it disolves then empty, refil, then boil twice.

P.s open alot of windows, it smells a little but it's an eco friendly way of doing it.

Soak the kettle in CLR for a few minutes. That should remove most of the lime buildup.
