Dial tone is the signal sent when you press a number or * or #, each one has a different tone.

A ring tone can be several things.
-- A. The sound your phone makes and you hear letting you know there is an incoming call.
-- B. The tone sent to the phone that tells it a call is trying to come in (ring, ring, ring, ring)
-- C. The signals sent by an old fashioned analog telephone. In this case each number was represented by a number of clicks. one click for 0, two clicks for 1, three clicks for 2 etc. Digital phones added the * and # key to create a 12 key uniform button pattern.

The dial or dialling tone is when you remove the handset (off-hook position). The ring or ringing tone is a signal sent back from the called switching center that a connection is being made.

The tones may be artificially generated by your system, or not. Nothing is the way it used to be: ask a Telephone Pioneer (a member of the telephone workers' oldtimer's club).
