Alcohols of all kinds are basically sugars. Diabetics, in general, shouldn't really drink alcohol, or at least not too often.
Clear colourless alcohols, such as vodka or gin, have less impact on blood sugar than beers and wines. My diabetic friend allowed herself one beer per week as a treat, but always had to really watch her blood sugar afterward. Normally, at a party or such, she would drink vodka with diet sprite (or similar) and have fewer blood sugar problems.

Alcohol generally raises blood sugar as it breaks down. A diabetic person who requires insulin may require more to deal with the extra sugar. Excessive consumption may cause a problem because the individual can lose the judgement necessary to continue to monitor his/her blood sugar.

excessive drinking can actually drop your blood sugar to dangerous levels if you have diabetes and are taking insulin or other medications.. this is very dangerous because the symptoms of this (hypoglycemia) are very similar to being drunk.. but as long as you don't drink excessively and check your blood sugar before you drink you should be alright.
