Since you asked this under the Higher Education category you may mean a Visitor in universities or colleges. If so a Visitor is one of a team that visits the institution and evaluates for the purpose of accreditation. If all is well then a new period of years, six years is normal now, is given the classes are then accepted at full value at other colleges and universities.

I don't know what the "role" of a visitor is exactly but I do know hospitality is a 2 way street. There are certain rules guest must follow too when visiting others in their homes like being courteous, not being a slob and picking up after yourself, using tact, being respectful, foll wing house rules, etc. If you can't abide to this don't expect too much from the host.

In Germany the role or custom for a visitor a guest is not to become unwanted or undesireable as a future visitor. So you visit and bring a gift of suitable desireability such as a good wine, or flowers or good cheese so that your invading the space and house/life/privacy of those whom you are visiting is soften and more desired such that you will be welcomed back in the future. I like this custom I learned so I try to adhere to it in the US as I learned it in Germany when I was stationed there. I think it means that as a visitor remember also that guests are like fish they stink after three days so leave come back later go away do not live off your hosts etc. Make yourself a welcome guest who is always wanted back.

the role of a visitor is to enrich the host or his family (not necessarily with money, but with something that makes their lives better or their time more enjoyable) and to permit the host to demonstrate the quality of his hospitality.
in a situation of visiting and hospitality, tokens of exchange are subject to their own rules of quantification which do not necessarily correlate directly with the standards of economy within the closed system upon which the visitor is an intruder. this gives visitors a lot of leeway to operate outside of the normal standards of behaviour and exchange. in this way they can also help to keep social and economic systems from becoming to rigid.

The role of a visitor is determined by the context and circumstances of the visit:

To call on socially.
To go to see or spend time at (a place) with a certain intent, such as visiting a museum or visiting London.
To stay with as a guest.
To go to see in an official or professional capacity, as in visiting the dentist or a priest visiting his parishioners.
To go or come to, as in visiting the bank on Fridays.
To go to see in order to aid or console, such as visiting the sick and dying.

To make oneself known to or seize fleetingly, such as visited by a bizarre thought.

To afflict or assail, like a plague visiting the village.
To inflict punishment on or for, as in the sins of the ancestors were visited on their descendants.
