I borrowed GTA Vice City, from a friend. I played it for a few minutes, and it froze up. I restarted it, played it for a while longer, and then it froze up again. There was also a glitch were my car fell right through the ground. There are no scratches on the disk, so this was all very confusing to me. My PS2 is about 5 years old, and I am starting to think that is why I am having these problems. Should I buy a new console, or can I get it fixed for a reasonable price?

If you have the original PS2, the one the size of a very old family bible then if its not broken it will be. Everyone one I know that had one of those broke. Same with the original XBOX. see the companies that make these products are under pressure to release them as soon as possible and they put them out on the market without proper testing and diagnostics, then after a year or two and after recieving numerous complaints from people all over who use them on a daily basis they fix all the problems and re-release it. The new xbox and the new slimline PS2 are the way to go, same as the XBOX 360 there are already numerous problems reported, I cant wait till they put out the new version so I can get one. And I wouldn't recommend picking up a PS3 either right away. Nintendo however has a good reputation with putting out quality products, like the N64 and Gamecube were never re-relealsed because the did adiqit market testing.

I know how you feel...My Xbox is 4 years old, and I have a problem in which the Xbox overheats and stops working for a while. But before you worry about fixing it or buying another one, test all your other games to see if they freeze in the same manner as Vice City. If they do not freeze, do not worry. It is obviously not your PS2. Anyways, if the problem persists, you should check eBay, because you can probably get a new PS2 for a very reasonable price. Getting consoles fixed tends to be extremely pricey, so it would definately be a good idea to take your PS2 into a place where it can be fixed, and ask for the price to fix it. However, before this, check eBay and see how much a new PS2 goes for these days. Compare the prices, and make your decision. If it is only a little more expensive to buy a new one, definately go for the new one. Good luck, and hope your PS2 feels better... ;)
Here is a link to look at some prices if need be:

Sometimes the cd itself may be pirated. Try playing the game with your ps2 standing vertically. If you're already playing your ps2 like that, then try horizontal. It worked for my San Andreas, so it should for yours.
Good luck!!!
