I've heard it said that if Richard Nixon was trying to run under the republican ticket today he wouldn't make it because he'd be considered too liberal. In years past when he was president, many had considered him to be an exceedingly uptight conservative, ergo "tricky Dick," being his nickname since he was also full of tricks like many conservatives. So what gives? How is it we are returning to conservativism, with the rise in gangs and violence that seems to be a offshoot of all of this as well. Anybody ready to go back to the Peace and Love of the 60's Hippy Era? Of course without the drugs...but leave in Peace and Love...Why can't we all just want that? Why so much crap instead?

Mel each of your premises is completey wrong. First I am age 59! And yes I've seen the Mona Lisa movie and just because we've come farther than that doesn't mean we are treated as fully human beings yet...we are not! And further we are moving backwards TOWARDS that spot..ergo my main premise. Bush CAN be blamed for this and so many other things because he is completely unqualified for the high office he occupies. I think he is far more qualified to manage a MacDonald's where he may be able to excell.

Kris: thanks for reminding me. Yes! th 60's followed the 50's and Peace and Love and Understanding is around the corner...just a little more patience I guess. Remember that wonderful song: "When the moon is in the 2nd house and Jupiter alligns with Mars ....this is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius>:" Sing it now its coming...Peace and Love to all...many that will even thaw out Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh :)

Sammy thanks for the "welcome." Think I'll stay awhile. By the way, I am a very sane, balanced person, a medical student by the way. What a shame that peace and love are considered unbalanced when hate and violence such as that existing as I previously mentioned, considered as the norm. Thank goodness the Age of Aquarius is about to return.

Just look at capitalism. The spread of international "trade" organizations like the World Tade Organization who try to liberalize trade enrich the richest while making the poorest countries poorer. The richest people in the world also have huge tax breaks under the Bush regime.

The media is controlled by a few corporations. Ideas are dished out to the public, and pitch the news hidden with a "neutral" and "unbiased" cover, while millions are unknowingly brainwashed. Meanwhile elections are hijacked and the public is powerless to stop it. Millions have watched the 9/11 conspiracy movie "Loose Change" but people feel like theres no freaking thing they can do about it.

The world is more organized. And so are militaries and governments in control of the income taxes of millions of people. Meanwhile we believe in Hating each other over religion and race rather than Loving and working together in peace and harmony.

If you think the 60's were about peace and love you were probably stoned for most of it. Sorry you can have your little age of aquarius fantasy but it doesn't appeal to me. Frankly the 50's were pretty good times in this country in my opinion. You demonstrate your social ignorance by implying that an increase in gang violence is a product of conservatism. I seriously doubt your qualifications to fairly evaluate a U.S. president; but that's ok...dream on

We are not returning to conservative status, Bush is a 60s Democrat. He is so liberal that I cannot fathom calling him a Republican... but the Republicans are the same as 60s Democrats also. Spend, spend, spend, spend other people's money.... steal it, spend it.

But, I will give him credit, he knows that lowering the tax rate brings in more revenue for the federal gov't than raising taxes. Now, that fact being established, how can his spending be brought under control? Congress is as spend crazy as Bush... Bush is as spend crazy as a Democrat.

That's true about Nixon. In many ways, Nixon was more liberal than many of today's Democrats, though he was just as secretive as many of today's Republicans. Much of this shift to conservatism actually happened in the 1980's when the general politics of the US became more conservative under Reagan. Bush and his henchmen have just taken things to an extreme.
I would say that Bush's approval ratings speak to what the country wants.

My guess is that you're too young to remember the 1950's. Are we segregated? Are women receiving less pay than men for the same job? You need to see the movie Mona Lisa Smile to see how far we've come.
Now I honestly think I've seen Bush blamed for absolutely everything and it's ridiculous.
