My laptop behaves strangely..it works only when it is kept vertically after booting.it has never fell down, if to check for any loose contact. if kept in normal position, it will end up in windows 'Stop Error' blue screen (Win XP SP2).

seems like either a hard drive problem or a mother board problem. you may look at connections but you need to determine solder points on some components. when you lift it up the component maybe making contact to the connection when you put it down it might lose connection. Hard drive might be reading the drives but when you put it down it loses reading the drive. if your laptop is still fairly new then get it repaired if not then try one or the other.

Most laptop problems are with the hard drive. Even the little "drop" of half inch every time you place it on a table can result in HD failure. Go to your XP help and click on "Trouble Shoot Problem". Otherwise, take it to technician for repair.

you probably have some inner defective cables or pins, which only connect when vertical (gravity) and aren't properly connected horizontally. you should get it repaired... hardware problem.
