I wrecked the 4Runner and did front end damage..alot of body work such as bumper, hood, plus radiator and air conditioner compressor. The guy at the shop told me today the subframe was bent but it would be expensive to fix.

Two things:
1. Is the frame broken anywhere? If yes then yes
2. Have someone follow behind you. Is the 4runner tracking straight? Do the rear wheels follow directly behind the front wheels or does it look like it is going down the road sorta sideways? If it tracks straight then it's safe to drive.

If this was an insurance claim then you can get it repaired at no cost to you. Contact your ins co. To check the frame, a body shop will put it on a frame machine and measure with a tram guage. This will determin if there is a problem.

You can drive them even if the tracking is off, however, they will wear the tires out very quickly. Traction is reduced on wet pavement if the tracking is off, so, I would take it very slowly. Make sure the sub frame is not cracked or broken, because then they are very un-safe.
