The flames are colored because of the elements that are in the fuel being burnt, IE: Copper burns with a Green Flame.

Because of one of three main things, 1. Material being oxidized
2. temperature of flame, and 3. amount of other gasses in the flame such as nitrogen or oxygen.
For example if you were to burn pure hydrogen you would see no flame at all because hydrogen forms no soot or ash which is what gives off light producing a flame, where as burning wood gives you a yellowish orange flame due to the small amounts of sodium and calcium salts in the wood and also the temperature of the flame is hot enough to heat up the soot enough that it gives off light in the yellow spectra, and you can easily change the color of the flame just by throwing in a few chemicals or elements, for example if you throw in some strontium oxide you will get a deep red flame but if you throw in some copper filings you will get a greenish blue flame and if you throw in some magnesium you will get a bright white flame.

when an element reaches the red temperature, it emits light. the color of light depends on the element for example calcium's color is red and copper's is green and potassium is violet. in a flame the heat is high enough for elements to emit light and the color depends on which element is in majority.(in normal flames Carbon is more than anything to the color is yellow)

because then you can tell the amount of heat that is emitted by them. eg red is the less hot one orange is weak but hot yellow hotter blue is scorching and lastly u get white flame.... extremly hot and so on...

because when it is a different heat it changes color, the elements are different colored, but they have to be to a certain temp for them to burn but when they do there in color, makes sence?
