What is so important that you would live a 16 year old home ALONE FOR FIVE DAYS. I agree with the others you are asking for trouble. I wouldn't let my hubby home alone for five days, I think I wouldn't recognize my house. But a child, do you understand what a child can get into at 16. I don't care who good they are they are 16 and that is an age of exploration and peer pressure.

No cause that 16 year old kid can get a job. It's ageist the law to leave a 16 year old for 5 days without food.

This is probably not against the law unless the child doesn't know where the parents are and when they are returning. As long as they are left with plenty of food and everything that they need. It certainly is not a wise choice to make unless absolutely necessary. Much better idea to send young person to visit an exciting uncle or relative they enjoy being around. Send them with the parents and friends of someone you trust. A 16 year old - you certainly love them - but do you really trust his or her personal judgment and decision making skills at this time in his/her development?

Be responsible and call Child Protective Services and ask. As for the moral/ethical questions, this is in a gray area. How responsible is your child? Do you trust him/her to not misbehave, as in have parties or drink alcohol during that time?
I have known some kids that would be fine, but a substantial number of them would get up to no good.
