The terms refer to the jobs done by management and workers.

The white collar jobs are management positions and office positions, whereas the blue collar workers are engaged in more manual work.

I suppose it came about because management tended to wear white shirts and suits but the workers wore workshirts, often made from denim or drak material so the dirt or grease wouldn't show.

Blue-collar job usually mean those jobs that are more physical in nature while white-collar jobs are associated with computer work, finances - stuff that is more intangible. White-collar jobs involve people wearing a suit. Blue-collar doesn't due to the natue of the job. Hope this explains stuff.

A white collar job is an office job - one that you need to wear a dress shirt and tie to. Dress shirt = white collar.

A blue collar job is a more physical one, usually requiring some kind of uniform with your name on it. Blue jumpsuit = blue collar.

White collar is professional, office job (because you'd be wearing white shirts and tie)
Blue collar is usually lower paying, technical skill jobs (like being a mechanic). It's called blue collar because presumably the person would be wearing one of those blue jumpsuits with their name sewn on the front.
