Get over the whole slavery thing? And that it was so long ago, and it doesn't affect the Blacks of today?

Do you think that's right for someone to tell an entire race to forget the little bit of history that Blacks have?

Everytime someone talks about the hardships of Blacks, someone always says that it was so long ago, and that we should get over it. (Yahoo Answers)
My answer is No, I think it's rude and disrespectful.

Liza S. I'm not being judgemental of another race, I haven't said anything about another race, So what are you talking about, Or were you referring to some of the other answers?

The little bit of history part is referring to we really don't know where our ancestors came from, sure we know they came from Africa, but can we seriously say they came from Nigeria, Ethiopia, etc.

We come from different tribes and different countries in Africa, and we will never know where we literally came from, because of slavery.

I think that is a very wrong thing to say to a person..
I mean how can you seriously tell someone to forget their past?
Forget that their ancestors were beaten?
Lynched?
Discriminated against?
Called racial slurs?
Spat on and mimicked throughout society?
Picked cotton from dusk to dawn?
In slavery for hundreds of years, and is still being discriminated against to this very day?

The first couple of people who answered this question are assholes. That was one of the rudest things you could ever say to a person.

If your mother or a loved one was beaten and killed? Should you forget it, because it was in the past?

Hmm..

I don't think they should forget it or be told to forget it. Then here comes the big BUT, I do not want to hear that I put you into slavery. I had nothing to do with it and think that what happened back then was horrible. I would never condone putting anyone for anyone into slavery for any reason and I don't believe I should be accused of doing something I would never do. We should be allowed to remember the past and learn for the mistakes of our ancestors but when is it a good time to quit making people pay for what their ancestors have done?

Saying that I would also like to add that blacks have hard ships in some instances still. There is still prejudice out there on both sides of the fence but it is mostly against blacks. The people that think that someone else is less than they are simply because of their race has noooooo sense. I also can't stand to be told I'm prejudice before someone gets to know me either because if you got to know me you would know I am not prejudice because of race just ignorance. I CAN'T STAND BLATANT IGNORANCE!!!!

It's not right to tell people to forget about a part of their history, because that would just be like denying that it ever happened. Everyone should know about it, because it happened here, and even though none of those blacks who were enslaved then are here today, their offspring and so on and so on sure are here today! And they deserve to have their story be told, to let everyone know what they had to endure at the hands of their masters. So yeah, Blacks shouldn't be asked to "get over it" and I think that there should be a law that those who deny or try to dismiss that blacks were enslaved, should be held accountable just as those who deny the Holocust...or even dare to question it, get prison terms! ....And give me a break...Jews don't complain?! Ha! As if...that's all they do my good friend!

We are all here together on this earth until the end and we must remember we all walk the same ground, cry the same tears and breath the same air. As long as there are humans on this earth there will always be history for all human races. Blacks where not the only slaves in history recorded. So enjoy life and don't dweal on the past history this is 2006 not 1700

What do you mean, the little bit of history? If I understand it correctly, there have been blacks as long as there have been whites, and perhaps longer... so you have just as much history as us.

While I wouldn't be so forward as to tell a black person in person to "get over it", I do believe it's time they moved on and focused on the positive. Do I focus on how badly people treated my ancestors who were Polish immigrants? Granted, not the same as slavery, but no, because that's not who I am anymore.

I think that we are all part of the HUMAN race and it is very unfortunate that the Africans were brought over here by ignorant white people and forced into slavery.........They have a right to be angry, but power comes from action and the will to change........If we all decided that we could coexist as the HUMAN RACE, where would the KKK or the Black Panthers or any other racially motivated group get their energy to keep recruiting new members???? Come on, people, life is not about what color your skin happens to be or what religion you choose to follow, it's about love and compassion for other HUMAN BEINGS...........

I don't think they should forget about the history. But they should get past it and stop using it as a crutch. Its 2006, there is nothing stopping someone of color from achieving whatever they want. There are so many laws, rules and regulations against discrimination now that anyone who does discriminate against a protected class of people will end up ruined professionally, and financially.

Every ethnic group that has ever been in America has been oppressed at one point in time. Its part of being an American I guess.

I don't think anyone wants them to forget their history, just to stop using it as an excuse to dodge responsibility for their actions of today. But why would you say that slavery's "the little bit of history that Blacks have"? Haven't they been around as long as anyone?

~EDIT~
Perhaps people say, "Get over it," when they only mean, "That was then. Who's oppressing you NOW?" And I agree with a couple of answers here--*I* never owned any slaves, and *I* never oppressed anybody, so that whole guilt trip won't stick to me!

No I don't it's right. That would be like telling Jews to forget the Holocaust. Or like telling the families of the victims, and survivors of 9/11 to forget about it, get over it.

I think blacks should get over slavery. I never hear the jews complain. I think it's actualyl rediculous that blacks usually relate things to "Oh because I'm black, isn't it?" Many other races and cultures have gotten over there worst times in history. Sorry if I sound like a racist pig. I am not racist, but I really do think that blacks should stop using slavery in teh past as excuses for selective racism.
