Invaders. The goal of the individual soldier was to "liberate" the Holy Land, but the goal of their leaders was pure political power and monetary gain. The only heroes were the ones who pushed civilization forward despite such religious zealotry.

Invaders:
Some evidence: they loot and destroy Muslim property, kill Muslims and take their wealth ... it was allowed, as a motivator for Crusader soldiers. Crusaders also would be given a pardon for past sins if they went on Crusades. The people that really liked the Crusades were the Pope (increased his power) and the merchants in Italy as they sold weapons and ships to Crusaders as they went towards the Holy Lands.

Invaders. Heroes need to win and conquer. They lost. They were desperate. They even sent children on a crusade. Most of them were captured and sold into slavery as they passed greece.

It depends on which one. Some of the Crusades were for defensive measures, and others offensive. It depends on which one you are studying. Evidence! history.
