If you need a DVD-ROM drive that reads DVD+R/RW and/or DVD-R/RW discs, verify that the model you choose explicitly lists support for the writable DVD formats you need to read.

Most current DVD-ROM drives read both "R" (write-once) and "RW" (rewritable) discs in both the "plus" and "minus" formats. Some DVD-ROM drives read "plus" but not "minus" discs, or vice versa. A few drives, mostly older models, read "R" discs, but not "RW" discs.

Some models read burned 4.7 GB DVD discs, but not burned dual-layer (8.5 GB) discs. A few drives notably many Toshiba models can also read the moribund DVD-RAM format.

Many DVD-ROM drives and some DVD players can be updated with newer firmware to add read support or formats that were unsupported by the original firmware. See the product manual or manufacturer's web site for detailed instructions.

Getting a headache reading above...

Look, all you need to know is this. Find out what the make/model is of your DVD burner. You can usually find it listed in Device Manager within Windows, but if not, simply pop off the side of your case and look on the drive's label.

Once you get that, you can go out to the manufacturer's website and look up the specs. If it does not support DVD-R, then it's not going to work. No damage is done. It will just tell you "insert disc" or "disc error".

Yes, you should use what your computer uses. It's like sticking a betamax tape in a VCR. Sort of. Chances are good that if it's newer it can do both formats, though. Look on the front of the drive, there should be a logo there that says.

DVD+R and DVD-R are two incompatible standards. If your recorder supports only one of them, the other is inaccessible for you. Today almost all DVD-recorders support both standards and they are inexpensive. Upgrade to DVD+-R
