there is no law that says an employer has to pay you for any hours not worked

Everyone is correct - there is no law mandating time off, expect for federally protected leave (such as family medical leave, and that's unpaid). Some state or local rules may also come into to question. The best source of information for this is the Department of Labor website. Just remember that most benefits are just that - benefits. Your employer doesn't have to give you anything but a safe work environment and a paycheck.

There is no federal law mandating 1 week paid vacation. I seriously doubt there are any US states with such a law. Sounds nice, though.

Definitely not a federal law. There might be some states that require it, but wouldn't be real likely.

There is no mandatory paid vacation in any state. Paid vacation benefit is at the discretion of your employer.

there is no law requiring employers to pay their employees vacation time.

It is considered a "perk"; and different employers have different policies. Check your employee handbook or speak to the HR.

Well, it will tell you in your employee handbook. I get 8 hours vacation for each 416 hours worked as an hourly employee.
Try contacting your local labor board. :)

Privately owned companies can do whatever they want in terms of benefits and vacations.

It might depend which country and state you live in, and the agreement you came to with your employer when you first started.

Neither. There is no mandated vacation period for US workers.
