I sell hydro seeding products to pros's.

Each method has some slight advantage over the other, but spraying or Hydro seeding is no better or worse than any other way.

Hydro seeding doesnt cause weeds. It is not magic stuff. It is grass seed in a tank, with a little recycled paper/wood muclch, and some fertilizer. You can put all these things down yourself with out a hydro seeder.

Like anything, what goes in the tank is what comes out. If you use cheap seed in the tank, its just as abd as using cheap seed by hand. No magic, just an alternative method of getting seed and fertilizer on the ground .

Use high quality materials, and hydro, conventional, sod wont matter after a period of time. After its down, Water, water, water....keep moist. Thats the only magic I know of.

For a great seeding article..

Laying turf used to be the only way to get a new lush cover and have the neighbours green with envy. Not anymore. spray it! Try Hydromulch, a mixture of grass seeds, mulch, fertiliser, a bonding agent and water. After about two weeks you should see your first signs of germination. After about three weeks it’s starting to bind together and after four or five weeks you’ll probably be ready to give it a mow.

I've had both. I've found the spray on grass contains weeds, where sod doesn't. Sod is more expensive, and a pain in the butt to install, but I think it is superior to spray on lawns.
