What is the mosquito? it's a high pitched noise (~17khz) that supposedly only teenagers find annoying. it's used in the UK to help drive teens away from hanging around malls and stuff. supposedly teens can hear it, but adults over 25 can't due to the fact that as you grow older, you start losing the ability to hear higher and higher frequency sounds.

Of course, that depends on how good yoru hearing is, and some adults with good hearing can hear it.

I am 34 and I can hear it. I am a teacher and am glad that I can hear it; I understand some kids are using it as a ringtone.

I am 35. I hear it FINE. In fact, I found it annoying. In real life, sitting on my porch, I also hear mosquitos when they buzz around my head.

HOWEVER, that being said, the mosquito ringtones were really made so teens could have their phone rings without adults noticing.

Now personally, if I was teaching a class or something like that, and heard that sound, I wouldn't have thought "I hear a phone! Who has a phone here?"

Things make mechanical type buzzing noises all the time. For instance my refrigerator kicks on and humms, the radiator makes noise, water running through the pipes makes noise, etc.

If I heard that sound I would probably look around and wonder what it was, but probably assume it was something else. I would certainly think it was strange. But I wouldn't let it distract me enough to stop teaching class or whatever and go looking for the sound. It is the type of noise you can easily overlook. Its not obvious that that would mean a phone is ringing.

So the purpose of the recording, as a secret ringtone, should work great!

Interesting! I heard about it on CNN, but the UK using it to drive teens away is my first time hearing it. I hear it perfectly, I'm under 25. I asked my mom to hear it and played the sound 3 times and she didnt hear anything. Me: "Mom, do u hear anything?" Mom: "No. Should I be hearing anything?"

Nice entry =)

What you may NOT know::
A creative and enterprising teen began selling these as ring tones for their cell phones.
Teens know when their friends call while in class; they can hear it but their teachers CAN'T.
Do we call ths called Reverse Anti-Technology Plus? (RATP?)

I've done quick research on RATP::
