It is part of everything in nature, designed to slow the rate of reaction.... A drop of acid doesn't do as much in a pool of bicarb as it does in a glass of water.. The salinity of the ocean won't change much if we break every beaver dam in america and put too much fresh water into the ocean.. and the co2 / o2 balance cannot be changed by every car on earth, every power plant on earth, or every man-made whatever, because of the strength of the earth's buffer system..

A buffer is a substance which consists of a weak acid and its conjugate base, added to a solution to neutralize any addition of acid /base and maintain the soln pH
