Properly translated, the phrase is: You shall not murder.

Killing in self defense, a just war, and lawful capital punishment are not considered murder.

However many Christians including Catholics believe most modern governments no longer need to use capital punishment to protect society from criminals.

With love in Christ.

And then, later in the same book, God commanded people to kill those who commit various sins.

The 10 Commandments are given in Exodus 20.
Then, in Exodus 21 God says:
12 "Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death.

15 "Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.

16 "Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death.

17 "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

So, it is only OK to kill if God says so and you only believe the Old Testament. It is not OK for Christians (New Testament) to kill at all. They are supposed to "turn the other cheek" and "forgive those who trespass against us".

The original writings meant thou shalt not MURDER..

There is a difference between killing during war and Murder.

The bible gives many references to this...

Amazing how ATHEIST and agnostics who do not believe in the Bible quote this...

Ha ha ha look at this lame defense by flipping word kill with murder!!! What is the difference? Does that mean individual murders are not allowed but genocide through war is fine?!!!!!

Or is it that you cant kill your own kind but destroy others???? That sounds very Jewish!
