I recently purchased a used 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I was told later by a lady that I worked with that owned a 1997 Monte that her engine and transmission went out at 100,000 miles and that they tended to do that in these cars. The car I purchased is mechanically sound and was checked out by 3 mechanics and only has 79,000 miles on it. I was wondering if anyone has found this rumor to be true.

not true, I work in a garage from time to time and i am also a Chevy man,..lol!! It all depend on how good you take care of them. Make sure the oil is changed at least every 2500 miles. I know they say every 2000 but you don't have to be that precise. Have the transmission fluid checked every time you have the oil changed, this will insure that if it starts to have a problem it will be caught before it gets to bad.If you developer a transmission leak, or if it starts to act up on you, find a garage you can trust and have the filter and fluid changed in it also. Most ppl don't think about a filter in the transmission and that alone can cause it to go bad over time. If your engine ever acts as though it don't want to run right or starts quitting on you, then check the fuel filter first. It is inexpensive but can often be the only problem. OK, enough for now, but if you keep check on these things your Monte-Carlo could last for many years. I have seen them still running after having close to 300,000 miles on them. good luck

It depends on how you maintain it and which engine it has. If it has the 3.4ltr v6 they had some problems with the Intake Manifold leaking causing engine failures. This is VERY common in the Chevy Venture minivans... If it has the 3800 v6...those are practically indestructible with many running 250,000miles plus.

I would not worry about it myself. Just follow the basic rules of owning a car. Read your owners manual, keep up with regular maintenance( Use a Regular mechanic...not a quick lube place), and put a couple hundred bucks aside each month to pay for Vehicle repairs/maintenance and replacement of this car when you get ready to get a different one in a few years!

Sounds like a good car though. That is really low miles for a 95!

With proper maintenance today's car engines are capable of mileage well in excessof 200,000 miles. The engine in my well used 1997 Chevy 1/2 ton pick-up (4.3 litre V-6) is almost ready to turn over 300,000...for real. Oil change EVERY 3 months/3000 miles religiously.

If you don't keep the oil and filter changed, it will take a dump much sooner than that. The life of a car is entirely dependent on how well you keep it maintained. My 1985 Volvo has in excess of 230,000 miles on it and is still goin' strong.

Take care of it and it will last well past 200,000. If your coworker's engine and trans went out at 100k, she didn't take very good care of it at all.
